Canadian Indigenous Content

A collection of resources designed specifically for adult EAL literacy learners to explore Indigenous cultures in Canada through accessible language and images. Featuring The Maker Series (Indigenous Stories) and the CLB 3L/4L module “Going to a Powwow”, these interactive digital and printable materials build reading, vocabulary, and oral language skills while supporting respectful, strengths-based learning about Indigenous communities and contemporary practices.

The Maker Series

A series of stories by and about Indigenous creators in Canada. Each title in The Maker Series is available as an interactive digital story and a printable PDF with flashcards and simple pre-reading vocabulary support. These readers help adult EAL learners build reading fluency and vocabulary while learning about Indigenous culture and contemporary practices in a respectful, strengths-based way.

Stories

The Canadian Indigenous Readers: The Maker Series is a set of four digital and PDF stories featuring Indigenous women sharing how to make something meaningful from their culture, including:

  • Chantal Makes a Drum
  • Virginia Makes Bannock
  • Montana Makes a Dream Catcher
  • Chantal Makes a Ribbon Skirt

Each digital story is divided into four parts: 1. Listen to the Story, 2. Learn New Words, 3. Read the Story, and 4. Answer the Questions—making it an accessible and engaging way for Stage 1 learners to explore Indigenous traditions.

Videos

The introductory video for Canadian Indigenous Readers – The Maker Series features Suzanne, a member of the Tahltan First Nation in northwest British Columbia. She introduces the four interactive books, explains who Indigenous peoples are in Canada, and invites viewers to learn alongside Chantal, Montana, and Virginia as they make a drum, ribbon skirt, dream catcher, and bannock.
